How to make a silk pillowcase?

Pillowcases make great gifts for friends and family, for any occasion. If you want to personalize the gift, make your own pillowcases.

To make a silk pillowcase you will need the following materials: 45-inch wide silk fabric, matching thread, a sewing machine, and a pair of scissors. Straight pins are also needed. A large yardstick or sewing ruler is required. A fabric marking pencil is also necessary. You may also need a satin ribbon or lace, but that is optional.

First, decide the size of the pillowcase you want. This allows one to determine the size of the pillowcase and to purchase the matching thread. Then, one can measure the fabric and cut it to the required dimensions. Natural fibers like silk, linen, and cotton are preferred to synthetic fabrics such as polyester when choosing fabrics. If a fabric is susceptible to shrinking when washed, it's a good idea to buy more material than you actually need and wash it again before making the case. The fabric will shrink to the correct size by doing this.

The average size of a silk pillowcase is 21x32 inches. To make a complete set, you will need 2 yards of a 45-inch wide piece of fabric. One set of queen-sized cases would need 2 1/4 yards of 45-inch fabric. A queen-sized case will measure 21x36 inches. A set of king-sized bags measuring 21x42inches will require 2 1/2 yards of fabric. This is again from a 45-inch wide case.

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. The finished side is then folded inside. The fabric is then sewn together. It is stitched together along both the length and one of its shorter sides. It is important to remember that sewing should always be finished with a backstitch. The pillowcase should be turned so that the right side faces out.

A zigzag stitch should also be used around the open ends of the fabric to prevent them from unraveling. However, it is important not to close the top of the pillowcase. Fold the fabric down to the pillowcase's inner side. A 1/2 inch hem should be made on the open side. To fix the hem, iron it flat before sewing straight stitches through it. It makes it easier for you to sew through the hems if you iron them. When using a hot iron, it is important to be careful.

The final step in how to make a silk pillowcase is to pin a 4-inch folded hem toward the interior. Next, a straight stitch will be made around the bottom edge of the case. You can add a decorative touch by sewing a lace, satin ribbon, or other types of embroidery to the hem.

You don't have to be a skilled seamstress to make a silk pillowcase. Even a beginner to sewing will be able to follow the steps. This can be a fun, easy project for someone who has never seen before. Older hands may enjoy trying their hand at sewing and might come up with some ideas to jazz up their pillows.
